Spinach is a very good source of many nutrients. Prawn is a very tasty and healthy sea food option. Here, lets make a dish with these two, prawn and spinach, as the main ingredients, so we can evaluate how rich it will be in nutrients and taste. Lets make it in a easier way at out home.
Ingredients
- Spinach “Tropical Amarnath” – 1 bunch (in Tamil it’s called ‘Siru Keeraii’)
- Prawn – 250 grams (so after cleaning, we would get 150 grams of prawn flesh)
- Onion – 2 (medium sized ones)
- Oil – 100 ml (we can use – ground nut or refined or rice bran oil)
- Green Chilli – 2
- Garlic – 100 grams
- Ginger – 100 grams
- Salt – 1/4 tablespoon
- Chilli powder – 1/2 tablespoon
- Cumin powder – 1/4 tablespoon
- Turmeric powder – 1/4 tablespoon
- Coriander Powder – 1/2 tablespoon
- Tomato – 1 (1 medium sized one)
- Coriander leaves – few
Things to be done before we start cooking
- Buy 1 bunch of ‘Tropical Amarnath’ (a spinach variety that we call as “Siru Keeraii” in Tamil). Pluck the leaves and collect them in a bowl. Take half a bucket water and immerse the leaves well into water to remove off soil sticking to the leaves. Repeat this step for 2 or 3 times to ensure spinach leaves gets cleaned completely.
- Clean the prawn and wash them in water, keep the cleaned prawn flesh aside.
- Peel the skin of 2 medium sized onions – then chop them to thin long slices.
- Take 100 grams of ginger and garlic – peel the skin – then grind them together to make the required “ginger-garlic” paste.
- Coriander Leaves – take a few and cut them into smaller pieces.
- Tomato – take 1 medium sized – wash and cut it to smaller pieces.
Steps to Prepare
1. Place a big pan on the burner – turn on the flame to high mode.
2. Put the chopped onion slices into pan and also add 2 green chillies (break them into two and add). Stir the onions till they become a little soft (No need to fry till they turn brown).
3.
- Add 1 tablespoon of ‘Ginger-garlic’ paste that we have prepared. Stir for 20 seconds.
- Turmeric powder – 1/4 tablespoon, add this and stir for 10 seconds
- Chilli powder – 1/2 tablespoon, add this and stir for 15 seconds
- Salt – 1/4 tablespoon
- Cumin powder – 1/4 tablespoon
- Coriander powder – 1/2 tablespoon
Stir well for 10 to 20 seconds. Turn flame to LOW mode now.
- coriander leaves – take few (cut them to smaller pieces), sprinkle it all over the pan and stir.
4. Now let’s add the cleaned prawn to the pan. Stir well for 30 to 40 seconds.
5. Add the chopped tomato pieces to pan. Stir for 15 seconds.
6. Close the pan with a suitable lid, let the contents boil and get cooked for the next 3 minutes in low flame itself. In these 3 minutes, the prawn gets cooked 50%.
7.
- After 3 min, remove the lid, stir a little.
- Add the spinach leaves, (tropical Amarnath, that we already washed) to the pan.
- Close the pan with a suitable lid, let the flame be in low mode.
- Let the contents get cooked for 5 minutes.
8.
- After 5 min, remove the lid, stir well.
- Again, close the pan with lid, let it stay so for another 3 minutes, in low flame. We do this to dry off any water left in gravy.
- After 3 minutes, remove lid, stir well.
That’s all folks, our dish is ready to served and tasted.
